Sand Springs Pond (Brown County)
Sand Springs Pond is a 1-acre cool water pond located on Plum Creek Wildlife Management
Area in Brown County that currently supports a trout fishery. The ability to maintain water
levels to allow for long-term sustainability of trout supporting water has been a concern.
Therefore, the goal would be to implement solutions to improve the water level and volume
storage within the pond. Additionally, reducing tree and vegetation encroachment would
improve angler access.
Goals: Habitat, Access
Tasks:
a. Install outlet structure to manipulate water levels and improve pond volume.
b. Create a notched sheet piling dam and outlet due to flows.
c. Reduce tree encroachment along Plum Creek to provide more angling
opportunities.

Shell Lake WMA (Cherry County)
Shell Lake is a 160-acre Sandhills lake located in western Cherry County. The dam and outlet
structure have been reported as out of compliance with Nebraska DNR dam safety due to
overgrowth of trees and non-operational outlets. Like many Sandhills lakes, bank angler
access is difficult due to the vegetative ring of cattails. Additionally, the boat ramp is shallow
and primitive and needs to be improved.
Goals: Habitat, Access
Tasks:
a. Replace outlet structure and correct the dam to comply with DNR safety
standards and improve sustainability of fishery.
b. Improve shoreline access with bump outs, jetties and docks.
c. Improve boating facilities and entrance road.
d. Enhance bluegill spawning habitat with the addition of gravel beds.
