Nebraska Game and Parks Commission 41 Dry Creek, a spring-fed stream in the Sandhills that fl ows into the Calamus Reservoir. The watershed, privately owned, includes wetlands and wet meadows and is part of the Upper Loup River's biologically unique landscape, an important birding area and home to at-risk species like the Plains topminnow. At-risk species plan boosts habitat for all wildlife The Nebraska Natural Legacy Project is the state's blueprint for conserving at-risk fl ora, fauna, and natural habitats through the proactive voluntary conservation actions of partners, communities, and individuals. Funded by the State Wildlife Grant Program, the plan prioritizes at-risk species conservation and landscapes that support these species and natural communities. The plan focuses on priority landscapes that, if properly managed, would conserve the majority of Nebraska's biological diversity — including coveted common species and our state's at-risk species. Wildlife biologists implement the plan's goals by working with a variety of partners — including conservation and agricultural organizations — to deliver voluntary, incentive-based conservation actions. Natural Legacy's projects are designed to benefi t wildlife and meet landowner objectives. Conservation work also is performed on public ground to improve habitat for many wildlife species. As part of a federal requirement, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service mandates the plan's revision every 10 years, and in 2024, Nebraska Game and Parks staff continued facilitating the update process. They hosted input sessions across the state where more than 200 participants from 44 organizations, landowners, and the public contributed feedback. Additionally, teams, made up of professionals from various stakeholder and conservation organizations, began to review and refi ne various sections of the plan. They will help draft and fi nalize the third edition of the plan to be submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2025. Once fi nalized, the new plan will serve as a guide for landowners, partner organizations, public land managers and other stakeholders interested in implementing conservation eff orts that benefi t wildlife, habitat and the residents of Nebraska.
