Wildlife management
Game and Parks continued eff orts to address declining deer, turkey and pheasant populations across the
state in 2024. We focused on improving habitat acres in an era of fragmented landscapes and disconnected
habitat lands. We sought hunter input. We expanded and prioritized resident opportunities, and we continued
working with landowners to address their depredation needs.
Streamlined process for big game permit applications
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved changes to big game permit application periods in
2024 to simplify the application and purchasing process for deer, elk and antelope permits.
The changes collapsed eight purchasing periods to four and harmonized elk and antelope landowner permit
application periods. The changes also added new nonresident deer draw units.
These regulation changes prioritized Nebraska residents, who can purchase elk, deer and antelope units for
14 days before nonresidents have access.
Hunters played an
important role in the
waterfowl rezoning process
in 2024 by providing their
input on current duck, coot
and dark geese zones in
Nebraska.
