Nebraska Game and Parks Commission 25 Lt. Field reinterred at Fort Atkinson on 200th anniversary of his death The remains of Lt. Gabriel Field, a soldier who served at Fort Atkinson, were reinterred at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park during a ceremony on the 200th anniversary of his death. Field served Fort Atkinson from 1818- 1823. While serving the fort, he died on April 16, 1823. Long after the fort was abandoned and the structures began to fade away, a farmer near the site discovered a piece of Field's headstone. Within a few years, in 1958, Field's remains were discovered in a nearby grave. Reenactors on horseback pull a buckboard wagon carrying the remains of Lt. Gabriel Field prior to a reinterment ceremony at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park in Fort Calhoun. Lt. Gabriel Field died at Fort Atkinson in 1823. Nebraska State Historical Society archeologists identified his remains and commissioned a facial reconstruction based on cranial structure.
