Nebraska Game and Parks Commission 23 Lake McConaughy Master Plan progress continues Design work completed at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area, one of Nebraska's most visited state parks, brings the Lake McConaughy/ Lake Ogallala Master Plan closer to completion. The design work comes after five years — and more than $4 million — of focused improvements at the lake after the Lake McConaughy/ Lake Ogallala Master Plan was implemented in 2017. Work completed in 2023 included 30% of the design on a 37-site, full- service campground at Martin Bay, where construction will begin in 2024. About 30% of the design work also was completed on the expanded dump station at Martin Bay, where construction will start in 2025. Designs also were completed on improved vehicle beach parking at Martin, No Name and Arthur bays. A new boat ramp, parking lot and other improvements in Martin Bay are part of a Motorized Water Trails project at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area in Keith County. Shooting sports complex opens under Game and Parks ownership The Kearney Outdoor Education Complex, formerly the Fort Kearny Shooting Sports Complex, is Game and Parks' newest outdoor education center. It opened in the summer northeast of Kearney. For shotgun shooters, the complex features four trap fields with two overlaying skeet fields and one five-stand range. The complex's 2,900-square-foot education center has a full kitchen and is rentable to the public. It is compliant with the American with Disabilities Act and offers classroom seating for up to 100 people. The city of Kearney's Law Enforcement Firearms Training Range — a 100-yard rifle/pistol range — also was opened to the public thanks to a cooperative agreement with Game and Parks. This range is adjacent to KOEC and is open to the public by Game and Parks staff when not in use for law enforcement training.
