Conservation officers create positive experiences
Aside from their many other law enforcement duties, our conservation officers partnered with
several entities to bring positive experiences to youth across the state. They did this in events
designed to provide one-on-one experiences for Nebraska youth. One example was a Shop-with-
a-Cop event hosted by the Gering Police Department in Scottsbluff. Officers took more than 90
children to Walmart to shop for Christmas gifts for family members, then helped them wrap
the gifts. Interactions with the public were positive, as the officers received compliments from
parents and store patrons.
Two other examples are:
•
An annual youth mentored duck hunt was held at Clear Creek Wildlife Management Area
for youth ages 11 to 15. The popular event, conducted by Game and Parks law enforcement
and parks staff, has five groups of five youth rotate through workshop stations: waterfowl
identification, duck calling, blind and duck boat safety, trap shooting and decoy setup. A
Hunt Safe Session, hunting dog demonstration and lunch at Ash Hollow State Historical
Park also took place before the hunt.
•
Officers played a role in a youth mentored pheasant hunt hosted alongside the Pheasants
Forever chapter in Box Butte County. In total, 18 hunters harvested 30 pheasants after the
morning started with a safety presentation.
