Nebraska Game and Parks Commission 55 A closer look at permits in 2023 In review of the net changes in permit sales from 2022 to 2023, the data indicate a decrease across the board of big game hunting, small game hunting, fishing and park permits. Permit sales often fluctuate from year to year, often due to weather and economic changes. High inflation rates continued into early 2023, likely causing consumers to restrict recreational spending. Big Game Permits Big game permits saw a decrease across the board. In response to drastically lower deer populations, proposed permit quotas for deer and antelope were lower in 2023, with a 5-7% reduction for deer and 15% reduction for antelope. Nonresident deer permits saw the biggest decrease due to permit restrictions and the move to a draw system for a few popular units. Turkey permit sales were considerably down across the board. Nonresident turkey was down due to the inception of a 10,000-permit spring quota cap. Small Game Permits This permit for small game and waterfowl saw a slight increase in total sales. There was a continued increase in resident senior permits in 2023. The Commission resumed the release of pheasants in the fall of 2023 for the Special Youth Hunt. The fall brought mild weather and steady temperatures that kept access plentiful. Fish Permits Fish permit sales were down across the board. Economic factors, including inflation, may have affected sales. Drought conditions in 2023, especially in eastern Nebraska, also may have affected sales. Park Entry Permits Park entry permits were down 3% from 2022. High inflation and fluctuating fuel prices may have affected sales. Windy and wet spring conditions may have affected consumer activity.
