6 Nebraska Game and Parks Commission • 2023 Annual Report Strategic plan focuses on the future In 2023, the Commission launched its 2023-2025 strategic plan, Focus on the Future, which built upon the successes of our previous endeavors, partnerships and management plans. Focus on the Future has three strategic directions: • Providing sustainable conservation and recreation; • Developing and investing in our people; and • Engaging and building relevancy with the people we serve. In the plan, we prioritized potential growth opportunities for recreation; documented ideas for additional fish and wildlife conservation research; and identified and pursued potential funding sources for the state's Natural Legacy Project. We also evaluated potential initiatives for staff recruitment and retention. The agency is proactively showing employee appreciation and encouraging professional development. It also is being creative in its outreach to prospective employees, conducting outreach in personable and engaging ways and promoting the perks of working for the state. To better engage the people we serve, staff developed standards evaluation criteria for our education activities to help build on successes. And to better understand our public and customers, we will be updating a study on motivations for participation in outdoor recreation and identify opportunities for growth. Together our staff and partners are helping us achieve sustainable stewardship of our resources and serve Nebraskans. Ice-fishing at Box Butte Reservoir. Recruiting and retaining outdoors enthusiasts The outdoors is for everyone, and we continue to invite people to join outdoor recreation. A new R3 Plan — or Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation Plan — prioritizes Nebraska Game and Parks' efforts and objectives to engage current customers and recruit new ones. The plan maps our efforts to understand our customers and Nebraska's outdoor participants, as well as what is important to them; what their challenges or barriers to continued participation may be; and our development of proactive plans and efforts to maintain high levels of participation in all areas of outdoor recreation, including recreating in our parks, fishing, boating, shooting sports and hunting. Over five years, our staff, volunteers and partners will work together in this R3 effort so we can continue providing the best outdoor recreation resources, access, opportunities and stewardship for generations to come.
