44 | Parks Info: 402-471-0641 T he first U.S. military post west of the Missouri River, Fort Atkinson was established in 1820 on the recommendation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Located at present-day Fort Calhoun, the fort was important to the early fur trade, river travel and Indian relations. Today, the fort has been reconstructed, and the site is recognized as a National Historic Landmark where you can learn more about life in the 1820s military and see living history played out before your eyes.
