Consequently, most tall stubble fields open to public access cannot be included in the printed version of the Public Access Atlas. This guide includes most of these recently enrolled tracts as well as other publicly accessible lands throughout western Nebraska. The Stubble Access Guide is only valid through January 31, 2020. After this date, hunters should refer to the printed or online versions of the Public Access Atlas. Hunters are reminded that the online versions of the atlas (digital and interactive) provide the most up-to-date maps as they are updated throughout the season (OutdoorNebraska.org/PublicAccessAtlas). HUNTING TALL STUBBLE FIELDS Wheat and milo stubble left tall after harvest provides habitat for pheasants, quail and other wildlife from late summer through the winter as well as excellent hunting opportunities. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission biologists work cooperatively with private landowners to improve wildlife habitat on agricultural lands and make many of these lands available for public, walk-in hunting and trapping. Within this guide, properties labeled as "OFW Tall Stubble" (illustrated in light purple) typically consist of tall wheat or milo stubble fields, and many include unfarmable pockets containing dense cover. Most tall stubble fields open to walk-in hunting and trapping occur in western Nebraska where small grains are more prevalent (see map below). THE BERGGREN PLAN FOR PHEASANTS A comprehensive, five-year initiative, the Berggren Plan is aimed at improving the pheasant hunting experience in Nebraska. The plan focuses on enhancing pheasant habitat and increasing public hunting opportunities within eight priority areas located throughout the state.
