83 Themed play can sometimes be lost in translation, but not when it is a part of a historic or cultural place. A miniature replica of the fort was an easy choice, but expanding through other objects of history that tell the story drew upon the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The dominant feature of this playscape became a keelboat, replicating its form to define the play space. This hub is surrounded by play features representing traveling the waterway, fur trade, and arrival at Fort Atkinson to replenish supplies – all centered on a single theme of history along the Missouri River. Currently, all of these play features are interpreted on the landscape, but children aren't necessarily connecting to them.
