FORT ATKINSON
STATE HISTORICAL PARK
Fort Atkinson State Historical Park is located
on the bluffs of the Missouri River and was
named after General Henry Atkinson, who led
the regiment to establish the fort in 1820. Prior
to becoming a U.S. Army Outpost, it also was
the meeting location between the Lewis and
Clark Expedition and Otoe-Missouria Tribe. The
fort played a critical role during the westward
expansion. Fort Atkinson SHP was acquired
by NGPC in 1963 and provides a look back into
the past through the living history events and
activities offered. Living history activities feature
demonstrations related to fort life in the 1820s
(e.g., tin and blacksmithing, wool spinning,
musicians, butter making, military reenactments,
family life, etc.).
To connect children to history, the inspiration
of this natural playscape emphasizes bringing
history alive in a different manner. Creating a
way to engage in a playful manner, fort life will
provide a meaningful connection to this chapter
in American history. The signature feature of a
keelboat focuses children's direct attention on a
key piece of history that was instrumental in the
activities at the fort.
