41 SAMPLE ROUTINE INSPECTION CHECKLIST This checklist is intended to document periodic safety checks of outdoor play areas, education exhibits, and other facilities (e.g., decks, stairways, etc.) within the play area. Routine inspections are done to reduce the potential for accidents and injuries. Check for loose nuts, bolts, and caps or protruding bolts with sharp edges or no caps. Check for splintering wood or fiberglass on play equipment, interpretive signage, picnic tables, and wood fences. Check for protruding nails, screws, etc., on decks, rails, fences, and play equipment. Check tire swings to ensure they're in good condition and securely attached. Check for vandalism (i.e., broken glass, trash, and other dangerous items). Check to see if trash receptacles are present and emptied. Check for tripping hazards, such as exposed footing, rocks, roots, sticks, etc. Check for slipping hazards such as sand on walkways or pavement. Check for areas with pooling water or poor drainage, erosion, wasp nests, poisonous or thorny plants, or other natural hazards. Check for sharp edges and points on all equipment, buildings, decks, displays, etc. Check all nearby sidewalks and trails for trip hazards (heaved areas), loose gravel over cement, etc. Loose-fill surfacing materials have no foreign objects or debris. Loose-fill surfacing materials are not compacted. Loose-fill surfacing materials have not been displaced under heavy use areas. Check the equipment for cracks, bending, warps, rusting, or breakage of any component. Monitor the play area for animal feces and poisonous and/or invasive plants, or mushrooms.
