Walk the banks at night with a bright flashlight and have one person shine the light into a frog's eyes while the other person grabs the frog. Late August to Labor Day weekend • Visit the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's Outdoor Encounter, including an aquarium, shooting gallery, archery range and many interactive activities at the Nebraska State Fair. August to September • Find gulls feeding on schooling baitfish and jig for white bass below them at reservoirs such as Lake McConaughy, Calamus and Enders. • Boat and fish at Calamus Reservoir SRA and tank, tube or canoe the Calamus River. • Prepare for upcoming hunting seasons by looking at trail camera photos, sharpening knives, gathering shells and cartridges and researching new recipes. • Go for a hike with a butterfly guidebook in hand, as thousands of swallowtails, painted ladys, monarchs and numerous other butterfly species complete their life cycle in the native prairies of Nebraska. • Introduce a youngster to hunting by chasing squirrels in mature forests statewide.
