Let me tell you from the phone calls, e-mails, messages, and “chatter” I have heard this week, I have come to the conclusion that there are a darned lot more people that need to learn how to ice fish! It happens every year, the ice starts melting, we get some open water and warm afternoons, everybody thinks it is time to fish, and then they discover the water is still cold, the fish are hard to catch, and then the wind blows outta the north at 73 knots, snow fills the air again, and everyone starts grumbling about lots of things including spring not getting here soon enough. I have bad news for you, our Nebraska weather will go through these wild swings for at least another couple of months; sit back, buckle up, enjoy the ride, sneak some fishing in when you can.
It is way easier to catch fish in cold water through a hole in the ice, come to think of it, much better on the attitude and mental health as well. That is why some of us try to make the ice fishing last as long as possible; works a lot better than trying to do this!

If you can get to some our cold-water fisheries, some of our year-round trout waters, those would be your best open-water bets right now. Maybe some pike, crappies, bass and even channel cats when we get a few more warm days.
