Where to Begin – Learn to Hunt

September 18, 2017 Aaron Hershberger

The first step in any journey can sometimes be the toughest one to take.  Hunting is no different. If you weren’t born into it or simply just taken along by family or a friend- Where do you begin?

There is a growing trend nowadays in adults wanting to try hunting, too.  Some of us are interested in spending more time outdoors, others are drawn by the ability to secure local foods for our needs, and still others are simply getting the time needed to try something new.  But again if you do not know anyone that hunts – Who do you ask for help?

In Nebraska, we are fortunate that each year several Learn to Hunt workshops are offered by Outdoor Educators and experienced Game and Parks volunteers around the state for adults wanting to get started.  The workshops are held on weekday evenings, generally 2 ½ hours long and are informal discussions about a featured game animal.  All of them address the basics needed to get started: regulations, where to hunt, techniques and strategies – mixed in are some safety reminders, too.

This next month is full of Learn to Hunt workshops as we dive headlong in to the fall hunting seasons.  October workshops will cover Waterfowl, Upland Bird and Deer.  You can check out the locations and dates as well as register by visiting the Learn to Hunt webpage.

Hope to see you there.
