National Trails Day in state parks is June 3

LINCOLN, Neb. – Get outdoors and celebrate National Trails Day on June 3 in Nebraska’s state parks. Activities will be held in three state park areas to commemorate the day.

Ash Hollow State Historical Park (SHP) – Meet at the picnic area at 10 a.m. for a 3-mile guided hike through the park along the historic Oregon Trail. Refreshments will be served following the hike. The park is located 3 miles southeast of Lewellen in Garden County.

Indian Cave State Park – Volunteers are needed to help restore trails in the park. Work will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., or at the volunteer’s discretion. Bring work gloves and appropriate clothing. Call the park at 402-883-2575 to register. Indian Cave is located 6 miles east of Shubert in Richardson County.

Rock Creek Station SHP – Enjoy living history demonstrations at Rock Creek Trail Days on June 3-4. Starting at 9 a.m. both days, living history reenactors will demonstrate blacksmithing, Dutch oven cooking, frontier cabin life, military encampment, Pony Express runs, rope making, tatting, apple butter making, zither music, biscuit making, and black powder shooting. Call the park, located 6 miles east of Fairbury in Jefferson County, at 402-729-5777 for more information.

A park entry permit is required at each park.

The American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day is a celebration of America’s trail system. It takes place annually on the first Saturday in June. It features a series of outdoor activities designed to promote and celebrate the importance of America’s trails.
